Laptop Ergonomics: Get Comfortable With Your Laptop

Laptops are great, but using them can invariably lead to discomfort. It seems that laptop screens are almost never at a comfortable height or angle. Sitting on a desk, laptop screens are often too low for most people to use comfortably. This leads to slouching, hunching, and eye-strain as people tweak their neck and backs to better see the screen. When held directly on your lap, for example on a couch or in bed, laptops get hot. The heat combined with an awkward viewing angle can lead to extreme discomfort.

Luckily, you don't have to contort your body into uncomfortable positions to use a laptop. Use an ergonomic laptop stand instead of a regular table or (worse) your legs to support your laptop. The benefits of ergonomics, or proper body position while interacting with your environment, is becoming clearer and clearer as more research is conducted in the field. Overall, mom was generally right when she said "sit up straight." Proper posture has been shown to increase overall health by promoting proper blood flow, which increases oxygen distribution that can aid in alertness and boost focus. A truly ergonomic notebook computer stand will elevate laptops to a comfortable height and adjust in angle to decrease screen glare. Elevating screens to a proper height that prevents hunching and slouching can help prevent back, neck, and shoulder pain. An ergonomic laptop stand that adjusts in angle decreases screen glare and offers further elevation to ensure that the laptop's screen is at the perfect height for comfortable viewing. Less glare means less eye strain as you no longer need to squint to see the details on your screen.
Not only is an ergonomic notebook computer stand better for your health; but, they can also be healthier for your laptop. Choosing an ergonomic laptop stand that is made of metal allows natural heat dissipation that helps keep laptop computers running at a cooler temperature. Laptops can also be cooled by built-in fans and vents - both of these attributes should be strongly considered when buying an ergonomic laptop stand that is made of plastic. Lowering the operating temperature of notebooks has been shown to increase their lifespan and performance.
Use of an ergonomic notebook computer stand is not limited to the desk. If you frequently use a notebook on the couch or in bed, an ergonomic laptop stand can hold your laptop off your lap. This will allow you to stretch out more comfortably without worrying about twitching and sending your laptop careening to the floor. Even while sitting on the couch, we can benefit from elevating screens to eye-level; thus preventing the unnatural forward lean or hunching. Watching movies in bed can be a much more enjoyable experience if your laptop is supported by a stable ergonomic laptop stand. Using an adjustable stand will elevate laptops off your legs and allow you to position it so that there is minimal screen glare and optimal viewing pleasure.
