3D Printed Luxury

By Paulina Perepelkin
How will 3D printing evolve, and what business models are best suited to utilize this technology? With an ability of 3D printing to create unique, customized items, combined with the difficulty of copying some of the more complex designs created on the
most expensive 3D Printing machines, as well as the high price of producing these items, the answer to this question could well be Luxury. Rein van der Mast, an engineer and artist out of Rotterdam, NL is known for creating the world's first 3D printed pen. Yet I would argue to credit him with more - he has created the world's first 3D printed luxury item.
I have met Rein (who works under the name Pjotr in artistic endeavors) at the recent Rapid Pro Conference in February 2013. He was kind enough to let me take a close look at the fountain pen and the accompanying case. The craftsmanship and detailing on both of the items is not only highly impressive, but is simply luxurious. From the fine lines on the fountain pen head to the beautifully flowing lines of the sculptures, to the whimsical detailing of the hoof prints. It is a stunning piece.
The accompanying case is amazing as well. It is 3D printed as a single piece, hinges included. Yet that's not the best part. According to Pjotr in an interview with Materialize "The most thrilling aspect related to the case, was however, not the manifold hinge, but its surface finish. I did not want to spend a lot of time on finishing, so I needed a texture to mask all laser sintering related roughness. In cavalry, there is only one appropriate texture: shagreen, which mimics the skin of the stingray. Stingray skin was popular on the grip of swords as it provided the owner with grip during a fight, even with blood all over the sword."
This finish is the finest that I have encountered so far on a 3D printed item. When I held the case, it was hard for me to put it down. It would make for a lovely clutch, and I do hope that Pjotr creates a line of 3d printed luxury purses and accessories as well.
Pjotr fountain pens are priced starting at 7,000 euro, and can be fully customized for each customer. Pjotr is also able to create new themes and designs upon commission. You can contact him on his website or Facebook.
